A Note on the Agglutination of Meningococcus *
نویسنده
چکیده
Agglutination by monovalent serum is the method customarily employed to establish the type diagnosis of meningococcus. The test is simple and, in certain of its modifications, quite rapid. It is even applied by some bacteriologists directly to any gram-negative diplococci encountered in primary culture of the upper respiratory tract before their species has been determined by sugar fermentation tests. Re-examination of all phases of the method seemed, therefore, to be warranted. This was done in a series of experiments recently carried out, the results of which are described below, together with some data bearing on the subject of agglutinin-production gathered from a long series of experiments that -have been in progress for a number of years. As the experimental data are too extensive to be detailed in a communication of this length, they will be presented in summary form although they have not been published heretofore.

Comparison of the Potency of Polyvalent Antimeningococcus Serum Produced with Four and Six Representative Strains and That Produced with Sixty Strains, as Determined by the Agglutination Titer
The potency of a polyvalent antimeningococcus serum, as tested by its agglutination titer, was sacrificed by immunization with a large number of strains of the meningococcus. By immunization with a limited number of representative strains, four or six, carefully selected on account of their antigenic and agglutination properties, the potency was increased three- to tenfold without sacrificing t...

Precipitin tests, carried out on the cerebrospinal fluid from cases of meningococcal meningitis with monovalent sera, demonstrate the presence in that fluid of type-specific precipitinogens of the meningococcus. Negative results are secured when the spinal fluid is obtained after the commencement of intrathecal serum treatment and also occasionally when the numbers of infecting organisms are ve...

Sulpha drugs and antibiotics have superseded all these sera more or less already, and are likely to do so completely before long. The following antisera have been used (some of them extensively): 1. Anti-meningococcus serum. Strains of meningococcus from cases of acute cerebrospinal meningitis are used in immunizing horses. The cocci may be living, heat-killed or autolysed. Many strains may be ...

متن کاملStudy of the Classification of Meningococci
The meningococcus, like some other pathogenic species, varies in its agglutination in immune serum, some strains being readily agglutinable while others agglutinate with difficulty in their homologous serum as well as in heterologous serums. The different strains appear to vary also in their action as antigens. In order to secure representative strains, therefore, it was thought necessary to co...
